On blocking
Fandoms are for people to have fun, engage with others and escape for a bit from whatever is going on in their lives. You can like or hate any character, or ship, or plot, anything, and it’s alright because it’s fiction. I don’t care. You do you.
With that said, if you bring hate/bashing or even unsolicited/unrelated opinions on characters or ships to my work, you’re getting your comment hidden/deleted and/or your account blocked. You don’t have to like the character/ship but my work is not the place to go off on the matter, that’s what you have your own blog for or posts made for that purpose by others. My work is not a forum. Be respectful of my preferences and the time that goes behind every piece. If you want to know my opinion or share yours on any topic, you can DM me. I don’t owe anyone explanations but if it’s an interesting topic I might reply.
Also, if you cross-tag, miss-tag or are rude to one of my friends or mutuals, consider yourself blocked as well.
And this, in my opinion, is a closed-minded view and playing the victim. If you put something out there publicly, you are responsible for unwanted responses.
This attitude is no different than a Karen spewing a racist tirade then blocking people to silence them, or a homophobic creator spewing hate then blocking people who disagree.
If you release anything for public consumption, you reap the consequences. There is no difference between something done for fandom and a personal opinion if it’s public. People should be allowed to interact with anything publicized however they want. The act of sharing a work is creating a forum; that is how communication works.
The irony is that you would then block a creator and forcibly reduce their audience and their ability to have fun. Choice is only for you.
That’s not choice.
@nangbaby
That’s alright, you’re free to disagree with me. As I said in the tags I’m glad to have a conversation going. This is about commenting etiquette which people really have either forgotten or don’t care about, and how I’ve chosen to deal with the issue in my own space.
“This attitude is no different than a Karen spewing a racist tirade then blocking people to silence them, or a homophobic creator spewing hate then blocking people who disagree.”
You’re comparing me sharing my artwork, my PG13 unproblematic content, restricted to it’s proper tags so it reaches the people interested in the subject, to racism and homophobia? What on earth do you think this post is about?
“People should be allowed to interact with anything publicized however they want. The act of sharing a work is creating a forum; that is how communication works.”
People are free to comment on my work. Tell me what you like, tell me what you hate, what I could do different in the future, it’s all fair. Constructive criticism is what allows me to grow. Thats said, if someone comes to rant about how they “hate x character/ship” how much they “hate the way people write x character” or how they’d prefer if “y character was here instead” or that I “drew y instead of x” (all of which have been left in my comments) AND ONLY THAT… what on earth are they hoping to accomplish? For me to agree right away and go to alter my work to suit their needs? No. That’s not constructive. They’re venting. Nice, now what? I’m supposed to just “take it” because it’s public? Agree and draw what others demand of me? Unless you’re my client you have no place demanding anything of my content.
“The irony is that you would then block a creator and forcibly reduce their audience and their ability to have fun”
I’m an illustrator, my platforms are for sharing my work and gaining exposure to reach potential clients. People throwing a tantrum over their favorite ships or how much they hate my preferences in my space, is disrespectful and a waste of my time. If they don’t like my content in the first place (which lead them to leave an unrelated comment on my work) they surely won’t miss seeing me around. If leaving hateful or negative comments is your version of “having fun”, then you deal with that, I want nothing to do with it. The only audience I’m reducing here is mine, and I’m glad to not have that around, especially since they’re venting and not trying to communicate with me. It’s never about having a conversation but throwing their preferences on my face. Communication is a two way street. This ain’t it.
No one is entitled to my time and repeated behavior of that kind is tiring and unneeded. It’s not about being a Karen, it’s about asking for the minimum which is respect.
GO OFF LIN!!!!!!! TELL EM!!!!
